UPA released a report in March, 2021 benchmarking support for the organic sector both globally and in Canada.UPA released a report in March, 2021 benchmarking support for the organic sector both globally and in Canada.
The report compares support for organic farming provided by Minnesota and California in the USA, France, Germany and Denmark in the EU, and Switzerland with that of Canada, and specifically Quebec.
Highlights from this report reveal that in California, government programs pay three-quarters of the cost of organic certification, allowing organic produce prices to remain competitive with their conventional counterparts.
Organic certification in Denmark is overseen by the government and is free. Their organic programs are financed through taxation of pesticides.
The Canadian organic market has grown by 8.7% every year since 2012, and in 2019 was estimated to be worth $6.4 billion. As we reflect on the growth of the industry, it becomes clear that further support is needed to allow for agricultural practices that supply markets, provide healthy and nutritious food to consumers at fair prices and sustain ecological systems, and also allow farmers to live well.
