Un approvisionnement trop faible en \u00e9l\u00e9ments nutritifs peut entra\u00eener une r\u00e9duction des rendements et des revenus. La gestion des \u00e9l\u00e9ments nutritifs est l\u2019une des principales raisons pour lesquelles les fermes biologiques, en particulier les fermes mara\u00eech\u00e8res, ont des rendements inf\u00e9rieurs \u00e0 ceux des fermes conventionnelles. Parall\u00e8lement, l\u2019application d\u2019azote (N) et de phosphore (P) au-dessus de ce que la culture peut utiliser peut entra\u00eener le lessivage des \u00e9l\u00e9ments nutritifs et le ruissellement dans les cours d\u2019eau, contribuer \u00e0 la mauvaise qualit\u00e9 de l\u2019air et \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9mission\u00a0 des gaz \u00e0 effets de serre responsables des changements climatiques. La gestion de ce compromis est difficile car les r\u00e9sultats peuvent varier consid\u00e9rablement en fonction des types d\u2019amendements auxquels les producteurs ont acc\u00e8s, du climat et des conditions du sol.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Il ne s\u2019agit pas de\u00a0 simplement ajouter du compost aux l\u00e9gumes chaque ann\u00e9e. Il est important de conna\u00eetre la quantit\u00e9 d\u2019azote et de phosphore requise (et celle qui sera retir\u00e9e du sol par la culture) et la teneur en azote et en phosphore contenue dans un amendement. Par exemple, le ratio azote\/phosphore id\u00e9al pour la pomme de terre est de 6\/1 et de 7\/6 pour l\u2019\u00e9pinard. Cependant, les ratios azote\/phosphore provenant des fumiers et du compost peuvent \u00eatre aussi bas que 1\/3 et 0\/6, respectivement. Le r\u00e9sultat de cette inad\u00e9quation est qu&rsquo;au fil du temps, les agriculteurs qui appliquent du compost ou du fumier pour r\u00e9pondre aux besoins en azote de leurs cultures accumulent du P dans le sol, \u00e0 un niveau qui pourrait d\u00e9passer les niveaux salubres pour l&rsquo;environnement.\u00a0 De plus, la quantit\u00e9 totale d&rsquo;azote pr\u00e9sente dans les amendements se min\u00e9ralise en azote assimilable par les plantes \u00e0 des taux variables. Par exemple, des incubations en laboratoire de fumier de volaille compost\u00e9 ont d\u00e9montr\u00e9 que la quantit\u00e9 totale d\u2019azote min\u00e9ralis\u00e9 au cours d\u2019une saison peut varier de 3 \u00e0 37 %.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Les taux de min\u00e9ralisation sont largement d\u00e9termin\u00e9s par le rapport carbone\/azote (C\/N) des amendements, mais aussi par le type de sol, la temp\u00e9rature et l\u2019humidit\u00e9. Pour harmoniser avec pr\u00e9cision l\u2019apport en \u00e9l\u00e9ments nutritifs et les besoins des cultures, il faut donc non seulement conna\u00eetre la teneur en azote et en phosphore des amendements, mais aussi estimer la quantit\u00e9 susceptible d\u2019\u00eatre min\u00e9ralis\u00e9e pendant la saison de production. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 ces informations, les producteurs peuvent utiliser des engrais autoris\u00e9s pour compenser tout d\u00e9s\u00e9quilibre dans le rapport N\/P.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Id\u00e9alement, une grande partie de l\u2019azote et du phosphore appliqu\u00e9s \u00e0 un champ proviendrait du recyclage d\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9ments nutritifs des cultures de couverture cultiv\u00e9es en hiver. L\u2019azote pourrait aussi \u00eatre ajout\u00e9 au syst\u00e8me \u00e0 l\u2019aide de cultures fixatrices d\u2019azote (plut\u00f4t que par l\u2019ajout d\u2019amendements). Cependant, le recours aux cultures de couverture n\u2019est pas toujours efficace en Colombie-Britannique. Les producteurs disposent d\u2019une courte p\u00e9riode pour les \u00e9tablir, les hivers froids limitent la fixation de l\u2019azote et la production de biomasse, et les oiseaux migrateurs peuvent compl\u00e8tement d\u00e9truire les cultures de couverture.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Enfin, le co\u00fbt du compost, du fumier et des engrais biologiques varie consid\u00e9rablement en fonction de leur disponibilit\u00e9 r\u00e9gionale. Cette multitude de facteurs signifie que la gestion efficace des \u00e9l\u00e9ments nutritifs est une t\u00e2che complexe et que les meilleures solutions varient consid\u00e9rablement d\u2019une r\u00e9gion \u00e0 l\u2019autre.\u00a0<\/span><span Ces essais ont \u00e9t\u00e9 men\u00e9s par Amy Norgaard, \u00e9tudiante \u00e0 la ma\u00eetrise. Dans les fermes filles, nous avons compar\u00e9 les m\u00eames traitements que dans les fermes m\u00e8res (tableau 1), mais sans t\u00e9moin, ce qui aurait pu entra\u00eener une baisse de rendements.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Nous n\u2019avons observ\u00e9 aucune diff\u00e9rence dans les rendements lorsque les trois r\u00e9gions ont \u00e9t\u00e9 prises en compte. Cependant, au cours de la deuxi\u00e8me ann\u00e9e, dans la vall\u00e9e du Fraser (une r\u00e9gion dot\u00e9e de sols riches en P et o\u00f9 les composts sont peu co\u00fbteux et \u00e0 haute teneur en \u00e9l\u00e9ments nutritifs), nous avons observ\u00e9 des rendements plus \u00e9lev\u00e9s dans les parcelles <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Compost \u00c9lev\u00e9<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> comparativement aux parcelles <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Typique<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Nous n\u2019avons pas constat\u00e9 de diff\u00e9rences constantes dans le co\u00fbt des intrants, sauf dans la vall\u00e9e du Fraser, avec le co\u00fbt le plus bas dans les parcelles <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Typique<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">De fa\u00e7on g\u00e9n\u00e9rale, les niveaux de phosphore laiss\u00e9 dans le sol \u00e9taient 21% plus \u00e9lev\u00e9s avec le traitement <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Compost \u00c9lev\u00e9<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> comparativement au traitement <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Faible Compost + N<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Par ailleurs, le traitement <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Compost \u00c9lev\u00e9<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> a engendr\u00e9 des niveaux \u00e9lev\u00e9s de nitrates dans le sol apr\u00e8s la r\u00e9colte dans les fermes utilisant du compost \u00e0 haute teneur en azote (\u00e9chantillonn\u00e9 \u00e0 une profondeur de 0-30 cm).
